At Rice University, in Texas, students are reportedly attempting to create a beer that reduce cancer and heart disease using genetic engineering. The concept is simple. They intend to use a substance known as resveratrol (which can be found in grapes and has been known to reduce cancer adn heart disease) and engineering a beer that contains this substance.

The students are studying genetically modified yeast and plan to use the yeast to ferment beer and produce resveratrol. The whole concept is supposed to be presented in Cambridge, Mass. at the International Genetically Engineered Machine competition. Although most of the undergraduate students on the team can not yet legally buy beer, the team reports that the beverage would not be able to be consumed for some time.
