Stem cells may now be able to be used to create chimeric animals. One deficiency of adult stem cells is that they have reduced ability to create various types of tissues. Scientist have been wondering if they can inject stem cells lines into a mouse blastocyst as a means of discovering how many tissues in the resulting mouse are of human origin. However, several obstacles have limited the amount of human genes that are expressed in a mouse: only a few human genes could be successfully inserted into the mouse genome at a time without killing the mouse. The ultimate goal is to be able to create human tissues and organs.
